Jaipur-based National Award-winning filmmaker Suruchi Sharma announces the digital release of her short film Gagan Gaman, which will premiere on BookMyShow Stream on the 20th of January 2026. The release date holds special significance, coinciding with the birthday of legendary filmmaker David Lynch, a key creative influence on Sharma’s work. The film will subsequently be made available on additional digital platforms, including Apple TV, Google Play and YouTube Movies, with release dates to be announced.

Gagan Gaman premiered at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024, where it was officially selected and showcased as part of the festival’s Focus South Asia programme. The section highlights emerging voices and distinctive storytelling from the region, and the film’s inclusion marked an important milestone in Sharma’s return to fiction filmmaking.

The film marks Sharma’s shift back to narrative cinema after years of working in documentary and non-fiction, bringing with it her deep engagement with Rajasthan’s folk traditions and everyday lived realities.
Set in Jaipur, Gagan Gaman follows a newlywed woman who embarks on a quiet personal journey after receiving a riddle from a village elder. Drawing from oral folklore and cultural memory, the film reflects Sharma’s interest in stories that emerge organically from place, tradition, and lived experience.
Speaking about her approach to storytelling, Suruchi Sharma said: “I have started to see my practice as that of growing a garden of native species in the semi-arid landscape of Rajasthan. Gagan Gaman is a very special sapling in this garden which asked for all my might, courage and resources to grow. More than a year later, having finished a journey across some good festivals and having found appreciation from across the globe, I am very happy to release the film for audiences in India and eventually across the world. This is a film which builds on my connection to my roots in the cultural landscape of Rajasthan and connects them to my aspirations as a modern woman. What does seeking freedom ask from you in a true sense? For me film is an insight into this question. Fresh in its form, this is an offering for cinema lovers who seek unique fantastical films. For those who sign up for this ride, will be inevitably moved by the experience. It’s not so much about comprehension but resonance. The act of putting the film out is my way of seeking my audience, my tribe. Distribution for me is not just about numbers, it’s about intimacy and connection. I am hoping that this very personal exploration of dreams and desires is received with an open heart and open mind.”
With its digital release, Gagan Gaman now moves beyond the festival circuit, making the film accessible to a wider audience and allowing viewers to engage with it on their own terms.
